Police arrests 43 Rwandan refugees, detains them in Nalufenya

Uganda police on Monday arrested 43 Rwandan refugees on an evangelical mission to Tanzania.

The refugees were intercepted at the Kikagati border point travelling by bus yet they had been cleared by Tanzania immigration authorities.

They were picked on orders of Col Atwooki Ndahura, the Director of Police Crime Intelligence and their bus impounded.

The group including old women was accused of having connections to Allied Democratic Forces [ADF] rebels who last week killed 15 Tanzanian peacekeepers in Congo.

The refugees were first detained at Isingiro Police Station and forced to record statements.

The group was later transferred to Rwizi Police Station in Mbarara town and later to Nalufenya police facility in Jinja district.

Police says it is still questioning them and verifying the authenticity of their documents.
