Court pushes LC elections to January 2018

A High Court judge in charge of civil matters Justice Steven Musota has issued a 4th interim order halting local council elections.

The interim is to stay in place until January 30, 2018 when the case will come up for mention.

Justice Musota’s Monday order followed a request by Counsel Eric Sabiiti, the lawyer representing the Electoral Commission, for the court to provide the Commission and petitioner James Tweheyo more time to reach a settlement.

Tweheyo, a concerned citizen, last month petitioned High Court seeking orders to halt the LC 1 and 2 elections on grounds that the Electoral Commission had ignored students and teachers who were sitting and invigilating exams, respectively.

The development comes at a time election officials in Isingiro district are protesting the delay of their salaries and allowances.

They accuse David Mukundane, the Isingiro district returning officer, of mishandling their salaries after conducting registration and display of village registers.
