Police on Sunday arrested the Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] chairperson for greater Kibaale, Ayebale Kanyarutoke, for allegedly promoting sectarianism.
Promoting sectarianism is a criminal offence that attracts a jail sentence not exceeding five years.
The Kagadi District police commander, Romeo Oneck Ojara, says Kanyarutoke was found illegally registering people opposed to the removal of the presidential age limit clause.
Police ransacked Kanyarutoke’s house and shop where they seized documents containing the alleged names of people who have been de-campaigning the age limit bill.
The opposition official says he was seated at his shop in Kyenzige town, Kyanzige Sub County when officers showed up, grabbed him and started searching his shop.
He denies spreading sectarianism by any means.
