The call comes after EM Plaza Police team arrested two suspects identified as Ssemambo Nickson and Kigongo Steven as they attempted to change $40,221 counterfeit US Dollars, valued at approximately 146 million Uganda Shillings at one of forex bureaus located at King Fahad Biulding.
According to the Kampala Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the Forex bureau attendant, after identifying that the currency notes were counterfeit, he tipped off the area police and the suspects were apprehended red-handed.
The suspects are currently held at Central Police Station Kampala as investigations continue.
“Forex bureaus, small businesses and dealers of mobile money banking are the most targeted there we urge these business groups, the entire community in general, to be vigilant, verify the authenticity of currency notes before they agree to any transaction and always be quick to inform police to foil such crimes,” Mr. Owoyesigire said.
The Penal Code Act is not very clear on the exact penalty on possession of counterfeit notes however any person who possess counterfeits or circulates forged currency is liable to a term of imprisonment of 3 years and above depending on the magistrates decision.
