Police has confirmed that three people are so far dead including a policeman, student and resident during the Tuesday fracas in Adjumani district.
The dead are; Anyama Michael, Police Constable Mwesimire Hanington and a student named Opala Ben of Biyaga SS in Adjumani district.
Police spokesperson, SSP Emilian Kayima, said the incident resulted from a distress call to rescue a suspected boda boda thief that was being lynched by wanainchi.
The police at Pekele police post that responded met a violent mob that were determined to kill the suspected thief.
Kayima said in the attempt to rescue the suspected thief, the police were attacked and in the process, an officer shot in the air in self-defense.
“Unfortunately, the stray bullet hit and instantly killed a resident we are yet to identify.”
The suspected thief was rescued, rushed to Adjumani main station and the mob followed in an attempt to grab him from the police and kill him.
The angry mob started by burning a car whose owner is yet to be identified, attacked the police station and burnt six motorcycles.
The violent mob then descended on a police officer returning from duty and badly assaulted him.
He is identified as PC Byamukama and was rushed to Adjumani Hospital for medical attention in critical condition.
“The officer who shot has been arrested to help in our investigations so as to establish whether the use of force in that arrest was excessive or otherwise,” Kayima said.
Police and UPDF soldiers are currently patrolling the town to put the situation under control.
The Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, has dispatched a team of officers led by the chief political commissar AIGP Asan Kasingye to handle the situation in the district.
