Angry crowd blocks Museveni convoy, 1 beaten to coma

Museveni addresses angry drivers

One person is reported to have been beaten until he fell unconscious in a fracas that resulted from drivers blocking President Yoweri Museveni’s convoy on Wednesday.

The ugly episode happened at Clock tower in Katwe as Museveni was racing to Sironko district to visit landslide affected areas.

Presidential Press Secretary Lindah Nabusayi called it an “impromptu stop-over at Clock tower in Katwe to address taxi drivers on taxi levies.”

In a resultant standoff by drivers and police, one person was beaten to a coma by people said to be part of KCCA.

Museveni later cleared the air saying taxi operators at Clock Tower stopped him on his way to work this morning, complaining about the excess daily levies imposed on them by Kampala Capital City Authority.

“I urge them to be patient. Their concerns will be addressed. I personally do not support the idea of daily levies.”

He added: “If the rich are taxed at the end of the month, why should the poor be taxed daily? I will return and we address their concerns.”
