Besigye out of jail, burglar-proofs his car

Besigye's car

Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye has made a few remodels on his official vehicle in a bid to protect himself.

His Toyota Land Cruiser Reg. Number UAN 661V now has a wire-mesh shield to protect its windscreen, windows and doors from break-ins by use of metallic objects or stones.

Besigye has always accused police officers of vandalising his vehicle by breaking his windows while trying to arrest him.

In 2011, Besigye’s car window was smashed with a hammer and pistol butt by Gilbert Arinaiwe Bwana, an overzealous cop who sprayed him with pepper.

The latest attack was in Mbarara town on Tuesday scuffle where Besigye’s car was damaged as police battled his supporters.

“Besigye has burglar-proofed his car from the NRM’s notorious hitmen working in the guise of Uganda police,” one of his handlers told us citing cases of Rukungiri, Soroti and Lira towns where his two cars were damaged.

Released from prison

“Back from another three-days ordeal by Uganda Police! Arrested in Mbarara town; detained in Kabale for two days; taken to Rukungiri and Mbarara courts; back to Kampala,” Besigye tweeted on Friday.

On Thursday, FDC presidential candidate Patrick Amuriat and Kawempe South MP Munyagwa Mubarak, Besigye, his aide Ronald Muhinda and driver Kato Fred, FDC chief mobiliser, Ingrid Turinawe, Darius Tweyambe and others were produced at Mbarara Chief Magistrates Court.

They were charged with assault four police officers, causing malicious damage to five police vehicles and inciting violence.

Grade One Magistrate Ms Sanyu Mukasa released them on a noncash bail of Shs5 million each and ordered to return to court on January 16, 2018.

But Besigye and Turinawe were rearrested just after leaving the courtroom and driven in a police vehicle to an unknown location.
