Mbarara Municipality speaker, Bonny Tashobya, has finally been released from custody after being arrested on murder charges.

Mbarara High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Tashobya who was arrested last week following an acid attack on Amos Katureebe currently admitted at Mengo hospital.

Katureebe was attacked before appearing before the lands probe commission to testify about giveaway of government’s land in Mbarara.

The Chief Magistrate, Mariam Akello, ordered Tashobya to pay Shs1m cash before his release.

His sureties who included former Mbarara district chairperson, Deus Tumusiime, Stephen Muganga, the chairperson Biharwe sub-county, Teo Kataratambi, the councillor representing Nyakayojo sub-county, Kubule Muliwa, the councillor Biharwe sub-county and Henry Mushabe, the Mbarara community development officer were asked to pay Shs10m not cash.

Tashobya allegedly attacked Katureebe, one of his councillors on November 9, 2017.  Katureebe represents Nyamityobora, in Kakoba Division on the Municipal Council.

Katureebe claims that while he was speaking on phone in the night, he turned around and saw Speaker Tashobya pour acid on him.

The councillor is one of the many who recently challenged the Speaker’s leadership abilities.

On Wednesday, the Municipal Council had a meeting, but some of the angry councillors refused to attend including Katureebe.

Kasasira Samson, the regional police spokesperson, said Katureebe was first rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital and later transferred to Kampala for treatment.
