Police on Tuesday arrested former presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye, and Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] presidential candidate, Patrick Amuriat, while trying to address a rally in Mbarara town.
Police and elements of the military deployed heavily in and around Kakyeeka stadium where the two politicians were forced to hold the rally.
Police fired teargas and live bullets when Besigye attempted to access Booma grounds instead of Kakyeeka.
FDC mobilisation secretary, Ingrid Turinawe, said they paid and booked Booma grounds at Shs2.5m for the rally.
Besigye was arrested and first detained at Mbarara Central Police Station. Ingrid, Amuriat and Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munywagwa were also arrested.
Police further picked up Besigye’s driver Kato Fred and his aide Ronald Muhinda. They were all driven to Kabale and detained at Kabale police station.
Later in the night, Ingrid Turinawe was taken from Kabale Police station and driven to Bubare in Bubare Subcounty, Kabale District.
