Uganda Police Professional Standards Unit (PSU) will investigate its own officer who is accused of deflating car tyres belonging to former Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye.
The incident happened in Gulu town last week where police dispersed a rally at Kaunda grounds organised by FDC presidential candidate, Patrick Amuriat Oboi, had a rally.
It was also attended by FDC secretary for mobilisation Ingrid Turinamwe, Gulu Woman MP Betty Aol and Kawempe Mayor Mubarak Munyagwa.
An officer of the Police Field Force Unit [FFU] only identified as ASP Yesamu led armed riot police officers who blocked Besigye’s car with a police firefighting truck and police patrol pickup.
According to Besigye, ASP Yesamu did everything to stop the rally including “deflating our tyres!”
Asked whether the office would be punished, police spokesperson, Asan Kasingye, told edge.ug that “PSU will be handling this in due course”.
Also under investigations by Professional Standards Unit (PSU) are SSP John Ematu, who has been operating from North Kyoga, SP Joel Tubanowe, who has been in Lira and SP Tom Eyaku from Maracha.
The officers are accused of brutally dispersing a rally in Lira where two MPs Cecilia Ogwal and Sylvia Akello were beaten, injured and hospitalised.
In a reshuffle last week, the Inspector General of Police General Kale Kayihura ordered them to appear at PSU for investigation.
Kayihura transferred other police officers including; Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Mafundo, who has been moved from Mityana to Lira as District Police Commander (DPC); Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bob Kagarura, from L&E to Sezibwa as Regional Police Commander (RPC); and SP Rutagira Musimenta, from Bulisa to Namutumba as DPC.
SSPs Paul Kakamba and Peter Nkulege have been taken Kidepo and North Kyoga as RPCs respectively.
SPs George Obia and Bosco Arop will go to Kayunga and Buliisa as DPCs respectively.
