Muteesa I Royal University lecturers on strike

Lecturers at Muteesa I Royal University have gone on strike demanding payment of salary arrears.

The lecturers also accuse the Vice Chancellor (VC), Dr Arthur Sserwanga, of promoting divisions among staff members.

They petitioned the Buganda Kingdom accusing Dr Sserwanga of terminating staff without following proper procedure, lacking prioritisation of expenditure, reducing staff contracts from five to two years and failing to improve sanitation at the university campuses.

The staff members are highly demotivated because of low salaries and now demand that the VC resigns from the institution.

Over 3,000 students who are now stranded have also threatened to strike protesting missing lectures.

Last month, the university was closed following a students strike.
