Age limit: Nsereko mocks police summons, Ssewanya detained

Makindye West Member of Parliament Allan Ssewanyana has been arrested for taking part in a demonstration against the proposed amendment of article 102 (b) of the constitution.

Ssewanya was arrested alongside Jobless Brotherhood youth who were distributing anti-age limit fliers downtown Kampala on Monday.

Kampala Metropolitan Area spokesperson, Emilian Kayima, said the group will be charged for illegal assembly since they were not cleared by police.

He said Ssewanyana as arrested for blocked police transferring the group claiming they were his electorates.

The group was detained at Central Police Station [CPS] in Kampala.

On the same day, NRM rebel MPs told press that they had been summoned by Police Criminal Investigations Department [CID] at Kibuli over the statements they made in relation to the age limit debate.

They are; Theodore Ssekikubo (Lwemiyaga), Barnabas Tinkasimire (Buyaga West), Muhammad Nsereko (Kampala Central) and Wilfred Nuwagaba [Ndorwa East].

Vincent Ssekate, spokesperson Professional standards unit of CID, said the legislators will be interrogated for inciting violence.

Responding to the summons, Nsereko said not even police will intimidate or scare the legislators into backing down.

“Making the right decision is for the brave and bold. We want to ensure the public that we shall not be intimidated by the police summon.”

He added: “You will not silence the voices of reason with your mind. We stand with those brave MPs who have been arrested.”

Nsereko said the call for them to be patriotic demands that they stand with the country before standing as individuals.

“We shall not be scared and deterred. We shall continue with the journey to rebuild our motherland.”

He then turned attention to the MPs seconding the Age Limit bill and asked: “why are you scared, why are you panicking? Whoever is using you to do this will definitely dump you, it’s all a matter of time.”
