President Yoweri Museveni has indicated his support for the ruling party National Resistance Movement [NRM] Members of Parliament who on Tuesday passed a motion to table the bill that will see Article 102(b) amended.

The private members bill will see the presidential age limit clause scrapped to allow Museveni rule for life. The Constitution prohibits a person aged above 75 from running for presidency.

Museveni is 73 years old and under Article 102, he will be ineligible to stand for another term after 2021 as would have turned 77.

Addressing press at State House Entebbe on Wednesday night, Museveni said the MPs were provoked by malicious people to give their views.

He was, however, quick to point out that it was not the NRM caucus official position on the matter but “they are NRM people who have brought their views voluntarily”.

In 2012, Museveni told NTV that he would not support the amending of the constitution to scrap presidential age limit, saying active leaders are those below 75 years.

“I know there are some leaders who have been leading even beyond the age of 75 but I think if you want very active leaders; it is good to have ones below the age of 75.”

He added: “That is in the Constitution now. And I will not involve myself in wanting to change that. Because I think there is some scientific logic behind it.”

Besigye speaks

While addressing a rally at Bukhaweka Sub County in Namisindwa District, former presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye, urged the electorate to condemn their Members of Parliament who are supporting the removal of presidential age limit.

“It is your responsibility and duty as citizens to defend the country from selfish leaders,” Besigye said who was canvassing for votes for the Forum for Democratic Change, Doreen Bukhaweka for woman parliamentary seat.

The by-election is scheduled for September 21.

He faulted Museveni for failing to end the poverty that has gripped the nation, citing poor health and education sectors yet Museveni has been in power for over 30 years.

“You should join me in the fight against this move and I know we will win if we are together,” he said.
