Museveni relative guard handed death sentence

Nkamuhabwa, Pte Abel Katsigazi and Cpl Johnson Abasa after their arrest

A guard protecting a relative of President Yoweri Museveni has been sentenced to death for killing the son of Fred Karakure, the chairperson of Lugusulu Sub –County Sembabule district.

Canan Nkamuhabwa, attached to the Counter-Terrorism Unit who protects James Kabuganda, who is said to be related to the First Family was sentenced to death on Saturday by the army court.

The Court Martial of the army’s Second Division chaired by Lt. Col. Moses Emeru sat at Sembabule District headquarters and tried the accused basing on testimonies of six witnesses.

The state represented Lt. Hassan Mulyante asked court to find the accused guilty and give them a maximum punishment.

Nkamuhabwa shot and killed Paul Tumukunde, 31, in a bar brawl on Thursday.


His co-accused Pte Abel Katsigazi and Cpl Johnson Abasa were each sentenced to 40 years in jail for conspiracy and 15 years for abetting crime.

Nkamuhabwa said he shot Tumukunde accidently in a scuffle that followed an attempt to arrest the youth.
