Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police has redeployed Wilber Wanyama, the former Kampala Metropolitan North Region Crime Investigations Commander despite facing three pending criminal case files against him.
Wanyama is new the Commander of Crime Investigations in Aswa Region following his redeployment two weeks ago by the IGP through his Deputy, Okoth Ochola.
The officer was suspended and referred to the Professional Standards Unit (PSU) in September 2016 for the tampering with exhibits in a gold scam case worth Shillings 120 million.
At the time of his suspension, Wanyama was also being investigated by PSU for extorting more than Shillings 60million from a fuel dealer in Kawempe, burning CID offices at Old Kampala Police station and theft of exhibits including motorcycles and hard cash.
Uganda Radio Network has learnt that two of the files were investigated by PSU and sent to the Directorate of Legal and Human Rights Affairs for advice.
The PSU Commandant, Joel Aguma confirmed the unit sent its findings to the legal department.
“When we investigate, we send the report to legal with recommendations. That is all I can say,” he told URN.
According to a reliable source in PSU, the unit recommended that disciplinary measures be taken against the accused as well as conducting criminal investigations on the tentative charges of counterfeit, theft of exhibits and arson.
Emilian Kayima, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, says the cases were given to the Special Investigations Division for further investigations.
