The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General, HE Ambassador Mike Keiting, on Tuesday awarded and decorated the Officers and men of UNGU III at the UN base in Mogadisu.

The SRSG congratulated the officers and militants of UNGU III for maintaining high levels of discipline, keeping the good image of UN and safety of UN staff and its installations during their tour of duty.

Earlier, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) signed a leasehold land agreement with HirShabelle state.

Under the agreement, the state will lease land to the AU Mission for troop operational and administrative activities.

HirShabelle state hosts two AMISOM Sector commands, located in Johwar and Belet Weyne.

The Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson for Somalia (SRCC), Ambassador Francisco Caetano Madeira signed the lease on behalf of AMISOM, while HirShabelle Ministers of Interior, Mohamed Ali Adle and Public Works and Housing, Jama Hussein Hashi signed on behalf of the state.

“We welcome your government’s continued commitment towards ensuring that AMISOM achieves its objectives in contributing to the stabilization of Somalia,” Ambassador Madeira told the two ministers during the signing ceremony.

Ambassador Madeira said the support to AMISOM by HirShabelle leadership had made possible the relocation of troops from Somali National University to Sector 5, located in Jowhar, the state capital of HirShabelle.

“That is a sign of progress; that is a sign that we are achieving our objective of stabilizing the country,” he noted.

He also expressed gratitude to other regional states who are playing host to AMISOM troops across south central Somalia.

In his remarks, the HirShabelle Minister of Interior Mohamed Ali Adle commended AMISOM troops for their cooperation and good working relationship with the state, which he added had enabled improvement of security in the region.

“Am really happy with the signing of this agreement and would like to thank our AMISOM brothers for their sacrifices, those who have spilled their blood and stood day and night by us, to secure this country from the enemy,” he stated.

The leaders said they would pursue further partnerships with AMISOM in the interest of Somalia.
