Parliament has directed the Committee on Education and Sports to ensure that there is adequate funding for the sports sector when government tables the next supplementary budget request.
The decision was made following debate on a motion moved to honour the Uganda Netball team, the She Cranes that emerged victorious in the just concluded African Netball Championship held in Kampala.
The motion was moved by Masindi Woman MP, Jalia Bintu, also Captain of the Parliament Netball team who urged government to increase the budgetary allocations for the sports sub sector.
“I urge government to increase the budgetary allocation to sports and fulfil their pledge to pay special allowances to the team. I do believe that the She Cranes have made it and made us proud,” she added.
The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Winfred Kiiza, said that such funds, if given to the National Netball Team, would motivate the players to fly the Ugandan flag.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, directed the Committee on Budget to ensure that any supplementary requests presented include an allocation for sports.
“I direct the Committee of Budget to include finances allocated for the She Cranes on their next supplementary budget. This qualifies because it is unforeseen and wasn’t budgeted for,” she said.
Hon. Allan Ssewanyana proposed that all Members of Parliament also contribute Shs500,000 towards the She Cranes which will be used to buy the team a bus.
The She Cranes beat Zambia 67-50 on 29th June 2017 becoming the African Netball champions.
