Bobi takes oath, gives self 100 days to learn stuff

Singer Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine on Tuesday officially took oath as the new Kyadondo East Member of Parliament.

The oath swearing ceremony was held in the afternoon Tuesday July 11, 2017 at the legislative house in the capital Kampala.

Members of Parliament started by observing a moment of silence for the Late Woman MP for Iganga district, Hon. Grace Hailat Kaudha.

Ready to work with Museveni not for Museveni

While speaking at his home in the morning, Bobi Wine, 35, said he would work with President Yoweri Museveni but not working for Museveni.


“As a person who has been elected by people, I know I’m mandated to work with president and not for the president,” he said.

Bobi asked the public not to confuse the two.

“I want the public to know that I have not changed, I am still the same ghetto youth who is going to express ideas on a formal platform”.

He added: “I do not seek to speak in parliament. I seek to develop Kyadondo East. I seek to fulfil my promise to the people.”

Asked for a comment on the impending Constitutional Amendment Bill 2017 that seeks to scrap the presidential age limit so President Museveni can stand in 2021 elections, Bobi sounded in the negative.

“I strongly condemn the presidential age limit,” the musician said, adding, “I don’t intend to massage the ego of one person who has ruled us for many years.”

Journey to parliament

At 9am, Bobi Wine accompanied by his wife, Barbara Intungo aka Barbie Kyagulanyi and their supporters marched from his home in Magere village and headed for Parliament.


The singer picked black, yellow and red reflecting the Uganda flag as the colour them of the day saying it reflects democracy and togetherness.

Followed by a big crowd of supporters, his young preacher, Alex Kityo, and his brother, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, Bobi’s procession was guided by a police lead car which directed traffic.

From Kyadondo, the procession waved its way to Mpererwe and then reached Kaleerwe junction.

Police diverted the convoy to Kisaasi through Bukoto to the city centre as other supporters were diverted to Kaleerwe via Mulago to Parliament.

The Bukoto procession was further intercepted along Kira Road, blocked from going to Wandegeya and diverted to Acacia Avenue from where it connected to the city.

He arrived at Parliament just before lunch time and sat in the VIP lounge with Barbie.

Security, remarks on arrival at parliament

At parliament, police led by Kampala Metropolitan East Regional Police Commander, Siraje Bakaleke, deployed to secure the area.

When he arrived, Bobi first stayed in his car to cool off.

He then told press that he has always said if Parliament doesn’t come to ‘Ghetto’, Ghetto will come to Parliament.

“My first 100 days, I will first learn how stuff is ran … then I will ran stuff,” he said.

He added: “The last time I was in Parliament, I was in Primary One; now I’m back here for business.”

Bobi took oath some minutes after 2pm in a session chaired by speaker Rebecca Kadaga.

He then signed as the official MP for Kyadondo East as legislators surged forward to have a piece of him.

Kadaga called on other members of Parliament to give Hon Kyagulanyi space now that he has taken oath.

Speaker Kadaga then handed over the instruments of power including the constitution and Parliamentary Rules of procedure.

Barbie speaks

After leaving the house, his wife Barbie talk to press saying she expects the new MP to work for the people as he promised.

“We expect him to deliver. We expect to see him work. We will wait for him to come and tell us what he learnt from parliament,” Barbie said.

Journey from parliament to Kasangati for party

After swearing in, the procession took Fairway Round About to Acacia, Kisementi, then Kamwokya, Kisaasi, Kyanja, Kumbuzi and connected to Kasangati saza grounds for the big party.

Kasangati Saza grounds is the final stage for general celebrations filled with music and fun.
