Senior journalist, Andrew Mwenda, did not wait for opposition Forum for Democratic Party [FDC] to dry its wounds sustained from Kyadondo East constituency political battle.
As soon as Independent candidate and musician, Robert Kyagulanyi, defeated his rivals especially NRM’s Sitenda Sebalu and FDC’s Apollo Kantinti, Mwenda rushed to his social media to rub salt in FDC’s fresh wounds.
The Independent Magazine founder directly attacked former presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye, saying he surrounds himself with hooligans but actually has no people power.
In what he called ‘lessons for Besigye from Kyadondo East’, Mwenda also lashed at the state for deploying its full military might on display like it has never done before.
“The aim? To win in Kyadondo East. In spite of the deployment (and perhaps because of it) the NRM candidate lost. Bobi Wine won,” he stated.
“First lesson: no amount of rigging can stop people power. Second lesson: Kizza Besigye and his hooligans have no people power. Third lesson: FDC extremists claiming anyone stole their votes are deluded.”
He then advised FDC extremists thus: “Go to the people and get their support first. Stop lying to yourselves that someone steals your votes.”
Kantinti who was pulled off his seat, returned with vigour to win the by-election only to lose to a musician who has never been in politics before.
In a statement, the opposition party said it has been an incredible effort from its supporters and “we have done everything we can however a landslide Bobi Wine is predicted, congratulations to him”.
“All that’s left to say is thank you. Thank you for all you’ve done for this campaign. When this election was called we knew it would be tough but together, in a few weeks, we have achieved a lot with you.”
The party said because no matter how much money NRM put in, no matter how many armed men that Police brought to Kyadondo East, it couldn’t have campaigned for Mr. Apollo Katinti without its supporters.
“We thank you for attending our rallies in thousands, together, we left no stone unturned throughout the campaign. We thank many of you that shared our messages online, reminded friends and family to vote for Mr. Apollo Katinti. We thank many of you that volunteered with us, our campaign managers and poll agents.”
