Police Chief, Gen. Kale Kayihura, this week met with police officers and crime preventers of Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area in a debrief baraza.
In the meeting, he appreciated the teams for having successfully completed the three Summits, especially the Nile basin and refugees’ summits at State House Entebbe and Munyonyo, respectively.
Gen. Kale guided on the few challenges that he identified during the summits and directed on how to rectify them.
He encouraged officers to serve out of conviction, change their attitude towards work and work towards strengthening security for development.
Meanwhile, Kayihura’s transfer of all personnel from the Police Special Investigations Division [SID] has stalled investigations into hundreds of high profile cases.
According to Uganda Radio Network, pending cases include; Katosi road scam and theft of more than Shillings 4.6billion from equity bank.
The Division, formerly located at Kireka, is currently housed at Nalufenya Police Facility in Jinja despite its lack of human resource.
Some of the prominent cases that have been shelved include the corruption cases in Ministry of Education, Health, Public service and Ministry of Finance, the murder of city tycoon Wilberforce Wamala, the murder of Kenneth Akena by the Kanyamunyu brothers and murder of two Chinese women in Kikoni early this year, among others.
SID is an arm of the Police Crime Investigations Directorate that is mandated with investigating high profile cases like murder of prominent persons, corruption in government agencies and financial crimes involving more than Shs300m.
In April this year, Kayihura transferred the last batch of more than 100 detectives from SID who had been assigned to investigate several high profile cases.
