In a miraculous turn of events, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Sitenda Sebalu, was Tuesday arrested and detained in chaotic clashes with opposition members.
Earlier, the Kyadondo East by-election Independent candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine was arrested at Wampeewo grounds where Sitenda was supposed to hold a rally with President Yoweri Museveni.
Chaos soon broke out when “team defiance and noncompliance” soliciting votes for FDC candidate, Apollo Kantinti, battled with the NRM members led by Maj Roland Kakooza Mutale and police.
Sitenda was quickly arrested and briefly detained while Bobi was allocated another venue in Gayaza.
In a statement, NRM called upon its supporters in Kyadondo East Constituency and the public at large that Sitenda “was rrested by police on unclear circumstances”.
Rogers Mulindwa, the NRM Communications Officer, said the NRM chairperson Hajji Abdu Kiyimba was also detained in the scuffle.
“Police could not tell the motive behind this act but the party continues to seek a clear explanation. The venue was also later invaded by the FDC supporters rendering it impossible for our rally to take place.”
He added: “As an exemplary political party, we have therefore taken a decision to shift our rally to Sir Appolo Kaggwa Church of Uganda in order to avoid causing nasty scenes.”
Earlier, NRM ferried supporters to Kyadondo in its yellow buses so as to boost President Museveni’s rally.
