Gunmen strike Moyo as inmate escapes prison

Ugandan policemen and soldiers deployed to provide security along South Sudan-Uganda border in Moyo District in April 2017

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) are pursuing five armed gunmen who reportedly rustled 195 cows in Moyo district on Wednesday.

The gunmen crossed into South Sudan on Thursday with the raided livestock. Some 120 of the animals belong to South Sudan refugees living in Moyo district while 75 were raided from Ugandan communities in the area.

Lt. Hassan Ahmed Kato, the 4th Division UPDF spokesperson says the rustlers raided the livestock as they grazed. He urged herdsmen to be vigilant of their own security.

“The troops could not do much because the rustlers entered deep into South Sudan with the animals,” he told URN on phone.

It is the second time in three months that armed gunmen from South Sudan are raiding livestock in Northern Uganda.

Female inmate escapes prison

Hellen Acham, a female inmate on remand at Oyam central government prison for alleged murder of her husband in Lira, has escaped from custody.

Acham was first remanded to Lira Government Prison in August last year but later transferred to Oyam Government prison in April this year.

Ritah Matuka, the officer in charge of the female wing at Oyam Government Prison told Uganda Radio Network in an interview today that Acham escaped on Thursday at around 1pm.

She explained that it was around midday when they had just conducted a roll-call of all the inmates when they returned to their compound. Matuka said by last evening there were a total of 57 female inmates at the prison facility.

However, Acham who was much behind other inmates went and told her colleagues that they were being called by the prison warder to report back to the hall where they had conducted the roll-call from.

She reportedly used the opportunity to sneak behind the prison buildings and escape.

Prison warders with the help of the police personnel were immediately deployed to search for Acham.

Matuka said the team got reports from residents that Acham who escaped with the prison uniform reportedly dropped it in Obangangeo in Acaba Sub County and used a wrapper cloth commonly known as “Lesu”.
