It will remain in rich history of the 1924 founded Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) institution, that Olila High School Women Football club are the inaugural champions of the Women knock out cup.
The Soroti based club rallied from a goal down to draw 1 all in normal time and force the game into post match penalty shootout against Kyebando club Gafford Ladies in a well-attended and thrilling finale played at the Madibira Primary school playground in Busia district on Sunday.
Olila High School won the tense shoot out 3-1.
Evelyn Kakayi gave Gafford Ladies a 1-0 first half lead after a well converted header.
Nine minutes into the second half, Gafford Ladies’ goalkeeper Elsie Najjemba brought down the reigning FUFA Women Elite League most valuable player Fazilah Ikwaput inside the forbidden area.
FIFA referee Anna Akoyi did not hesitate but to point to the penalty spot.
Midfielder Cissy Nantongo successfully scored the resultant kick from the penalty mark to make the game tied one all.
Post-match penalties were then called after normal time to determine the leader.
Olila’s goalkeeper Karungi Vanessa saved one of the penalties Olila as they won 3-1 having scored through Cissy Nantumbwe, Norah Alupo and Siporosa.
Lydia Namutebi was the only player that scored for Gafford Ladies.
Sandra Nantumbwe, Annick Sophia and Shakira Mutibwa missed their respective kicks from the penalty spot.
It was all jubilation as the excited Soroti club players lifted the trophy handed over by the chief guest, Darius Mugoye (FUFA 2nd Vice President) as they were decorated with gold medals and a cash prize of UGX 3M.
The runners up Gafford Ladies received UGX 2M.
There were also a couple of individual awards given to the outstanding players in the competition.
This was the first time ever that FUFA is organizing the Uganda Cup for the women.
The tournament is among the competitions organized by the FUFA competitions department.
The others are FUFA Uganda Cup (Men – since 1971), FUFA Big League (since 2010) and FUFA Women Elite League (played since 2015).
