CMI, UPDF soldiers detained over Shs3bn gold theft

Soldiers attached to the national army [UPDF] and Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence [CMI] are currently in coolers at Makindye military prison for stealing gold worth Shs3bn.

Capt Godfrey Barigye, 45, from CMI and Pte Amon Twinomugisha, from UPDF were charged with aggravated robbery before the General Court Martial at Makindye on Tuesday.

Prosecution contends that on October 30, 2016, the accused soldiers armed with a pistol in Buloba on Mityana Road in Wakiso District robbed Kakule Kadenge Kadelos of 24kg of gold worth Shs2.9bn being property of Sameer Bhangi.

They were first tried at the Unit Disciplinary Court (UDC) at Bombo Military Barracks and later General Court Martial where they still denied the charges.

The court chairman Lt Gen. Andrew Gutti sent them to Makindye Military Prison until July 4.

Meanwhile, Maj Mark Wanyama and junior officer Lt Arthur G. Ruhinda, both attached to the UPDF Engineering Brigade were also remanded to Makindye Military Prison for alleged fraud.

They are accused of fleecing Shs7bn from a businessman called Eriya Mubiru of J2E Investment Corporation, a contractor with the Ministry of Defence.
