A cancer patient died at the Uganda Cancer Institute after he was neglected by medics for several hours.
Simon Ekongo, 22, passed on Monday at Uganda Cancer Institute where he had been from Kiruddu Hospital.
Uganda Cancer Institute Director, Dr Jackson Orem, told Daily Monitor the patient was given to a wrong ambulance which delayed and the patient died in the compound of the institute.
“We take responsibility because the patient died in our compound. UCI will transport Ekongo’s body to Soroti,” Orem said.
According to Florence Akello Okae, a caretaker, Ekongo was initially referred from Soroti Regional Referral Hospital to Mulago Hospital but was sent to Kiruddu hospital in Munyonyo before being referred to UCI.
At Kiruddu hospital, Ekongo was tested with acute leukemia and was later abandoned on arrival at UCI by health workers which cost his life.
