The Minister of State in charge of Luwero Triangle Galabuzi Denis Sozi has called for an urgent revival of the cooperative movement, to enable farmers speak with one voice and to benefit from their produce.
He noted that the absence of cooperatives has given way to the emergence of middlemen who were exploiting farmers.
The Minister was speaking during the opening ceremony of the training of farmers and local leaders from Mpigi district, at the National Farmers Leadership Centre in Kampirigisa.
He noted with concern the high level of exploitation farmers go through in the country occasioned by the middlemen.
“You must urgently organize your selves into famer groups to enable government serve you better,” the Minister said.
The Minister hailed the Government of South Korea for the financial and technical support that set up the training centre.
It was established on the principles of Seamaul Undong model for sustainable community development from South Korea.
Among other things, the Centre imparts agricultural technologies to transform communities from subsistence to commercial farming.
Present at the function were the Ambassador of Korea and members of the Korean Parliament.
