The body of South Africa based Ugandan businessman, Ivan Semwanga, arrived in the country on Sunday ahead of Tuesday burial at his home in Kayunga.
Traffic was paralysed along Entebbe road as all sorts of people flocked the airport to receive the remains of the former socialite who died in Pretoria.
Semwanga’s body was escorted from the airport in a black A-Plus Mercedes-Benz hearse with a police vehicle ahead of the convoy to clear traffic in what some could have confused for a presidential convoy.
South African Airways reportedly gave Ssemwanga a free airlift to Uganda as a token of appreciation for being their best and most regular customer.
SK Mbuga driving a Rolls Royce and ED Cheune, a Rich Gang member were seen at the airport wearing mournful looks.
Several people lined up along the road to watch the procession as they cried and ululated.
Speaking at the airport, singer Jose Chameleone said Ssemwanga was his good friend and even bought him a ticket once when voted for MTV awards.
“He called me. Chameleone, you have to come to South Africa. I will book for you a presidential suite. Ivan was my friend, actually,” Chameleone said.
The body was taken to Ssemwanga’s home in Muyenga ahead of a memorial service today at Namirembe Cathedral in Kampala.
