Police chief, Kale Kayihura, is currently camped in Gulu town where iron bar hit men have been terrorising the residents.
The town is said to be swarming with both uniformed and plain-clothed police officers ready to comb and empty the streets of any thugs.
Kayihura’s Wednesday deployment to Gulu follows an incident where iron bar hit beat the assistant town clerk, John Oola Omona, to death on Monday in Kanyagoga B parish in Bar Dege division.
Captain Santos Okot Lapolo, the Gulu Resident District Commissioner, told Uganda Radio Network [URN], Kayihura held talks with the police leadership at Gulu Central Police Station.
He will later visit the family of Omona in Lukome village in Bungatira sub-county in Aswa district, a development confirmed by Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa Regional Police spokesperson.
Five arrested for the clerk’s murder
With Kayihura in the area, police managed arrest five people for Omona’s murder.
Gulu District Police Commander, Martin Okoyo, told Daily Monitor the suspects are being detained at Gulu Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Among the suspects is Oola’s female friend whom he had dropped off before the attack.
Okoyo said police are still interrogating the suspects to ascertain their motives behind the murder of Oola before they are arraigned in court.
Fresh registration of residents
The District Security Committee has now directed Bar Dege Division authorities to conduct fresh registration of residents.
The directive will also see all unlicensed video halls, bars and social places believed to be hide outs for criminals during day closed.
Patrick Oola Lumumba, the Bar Dege Division LC 3 Chairperson, told URN the exercise commenced Thursday in Kanyagoga A and B Parishes where the deputy town clerk was killed.
