Congo authorities arrested and detained a Burundi based journalist and correspondent of Deutsche Welle media company.

Deutsche Welle or DW is Germany’s public international broadcaster.

Antediteste Niragira, a journalist and correspondent of the Deutsche Welle (English section), was first reported missing on Wednesday last week.

According to Sos Media Burundi, Niragira had gone at a refugee camp of Lusenda in the Democratic Republic of Congo to speak with the Burundian refugees.

His family was in contact with him for the last time on Monday around noon.

He was seen at the border of Gatumba (North-West of the capital) where he performed customs formalities to enter in the DRC.

Niragira was later released on Tuesday after several days in detention.

He claims that he was detained in very poor conditions.

“I spent the first night in a room not enlightened, where there were all kinds of dirt and insects.”

He added: “I have also been detained in a room of two metres on two with a single window where we were 6.”
