Dennis Mitala, a student of St Mary’s College Kisubi, on Saturday got to shake the hand of President Yoweri Museveni at Jakaya Kikwete hall in Dar es Salaam Tanzania.
According to Senior Press Secretary, Don Wanyama, Dennis Mitala of SMACK was accompanied by his teacher, Jennifer Okello, at the event.
Mitala, a winner of the EAC student essay competition, was recognised in Dar alongside other regional winners from Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda.
Burundi emerged winner of the EAC essay writing competition followed by Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and lastly, Rwanda.
In January 2017, Mitala was among those who won the DStv Eutelsat Star awards aimed at stimulating interest in science and technology and inspire innovative thinking.
Seeta High School (Green campus) and St Mary’s College Kisubi dominated the 2016 Eutelsat Star Awards competitions previously dominated by Gayaza High School and King’s College Budo.
The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards encourages 14-19 year-old students to write an essay or design a poster on a satellite-related topic.
Last year, students were asked to create a new age satellite to solve Africa’s future problems and students were to answer through essays and posters.
The essay category was won by Dennis Mitala from St Mary’s College Kisubi while Gordon Brian Alemo from the same school emerged the runner up.
