The Mayor of Arusha city in Tanzania, Kalist Lazaro, was arrested at Lucky Vincent School where he had gone to give his condolences on Thursday morning.
The Citizen reports that school owners, religious leaders, parents of the deceased and more than 10 journalists from various media houses were also arrested.
The Officer Commanding District (OCD), whose name could not be obtained immediately, informed them that they were under arrest for an unlawful gathering.
They were taken to the central police for questioning.
Later, two MCL reporters, Zephania Ubwani (The Citizen) and Filbert Rweyemamu (Mwananchi) were released by Arusha police.
Thirty five lives were lost in a car crash recently that involved 32 pupils, 2 teachers and one driver from Lucky Vincent.
Some other journalists have also been released.
Earlier, Acting Regional Police Commander Yusuph Ilembo told journalists in Arusha that the arrest was ordered by Arusha Regional Commissioner Mr Mrisho Gambo.
