Sim cards will still be deactivated Friday-Tumwebaze

ICT Minister Hon. Frank Tumwebaze

The minister for ICT & National Guidance, Hon Frank Tumwebaze, says the deadline for switching off unverified sim cards still stands.

Tumwebaze’s clarification comes hours after the Parliament of Uganda passed a motion extending the registration of Sim Cards by not more than one year.

The motion tabled by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon Winnie Kiiza, was premised on the fact that the registration for National IDs was first intended for persons of voting age.

It was noted that most people had not registered for national identity cards and could in no way re-register their sim cards which need the national identification number.

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga said the condition that would apply is that National Identification and Registration Authority [NIRA] avails Ugandans with the information they captured.

Legislators also cited the fact that once sim cards are deactivated, telecoms could suffer losses in form of mobile money.

However, Tumwebaze says parliament’s decision is just advisory.

In what seems a clash of powers between Parliament and Executive, says “tomorrow Friday’s deadline for switching off unverified sim cards still stands”.

He said issues raised by Parliament like loss of money through switch off of #MobileMoney will all be mitigated.
