Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has fined MTN Rwanda Rwf7.3 billion for failure to comply with licence obligations.
The regulator imposed administrative sanctions against MTN Rwanda for managing it services under an MTN regional hub outside the country.
The regulator says it had earlier warned MTN that such an action would breach licence obligations and a serious measure would be taken.
On May 4, 2017, RURA board conducted a hearing session in which MTN Rwanda was informed on the breach of its license obligations and given opportunity to be heard which the telecom admitted.
In response MTN Group Corporate Affairs said it had received official notification of a fine equivalent to US$ 8,5 million from the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA).
“The fine relates to non-compliance with the Directives issued by the regulator prohibiting the inclusion of MTN Rwanda in the MTN South and East Africa (SEA) IT hub based in Uganda.”
It added: “MTN has been engaging with the regulator on this matter over the past four months. MTN Rwanda is currently studying the official notification and will continue to engage with the regulator on this matter.”
