Nigerian starboy Wizkid gifts Uganda free shows

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, better known by his stage name Wizkid, has announced free shows as a gift to Uganda this year.

“I’m doing free shows in Uganda this year! 2days free to make up for last time!,” he tweeted on Sunday.

By “last time”, the singer is referring to a December 2016 incident in which a warrant of arrest was issued against him for cancelling his Ugandan concert.

The Nigerian pop star missed the concert slated for December 3, 2016 at Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala claiming he was “unable to fly into Uganda from USA due to unavoidable circumstances”.

“Between 29th August 2016 and 29th November 2016, our client (Face TV) paid to Mr. Sunday Are, Wizkid’s manager the full performance fee of US$60,000, a brokerage fee of US$5,000 and US$3,000 being per diem for the days they were going to stay in Uganda,” documents filed by the Chief Magistrates Court of Buganda Road Court said.

Over 25,000 Ugandans had paid for tickets in anticipation of Africa’s biggest musician of 2016.

Organisers of the event, Face TV, lodged a criminal complaint against Wizkid and his manager vide Case No. 875 of 2016 on charges of: obtaining money by false pretences, which carries a maximum sentence of five years, cheating, which carries three years and conspiracy to defraud which also carries a maximum of three years.

Having cost organisers $300,000 (over N144m) last year, the Starboy this month announced he will compensate Ugandan fans by giving them free shows for two days.

“@wizkidayo Well I still hv my ticket from last year, thanks for foxing Kampala Uganda,” a fan replied.

After Uganda, Wizkid will relocate to Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, and rock his fans on July 22, 2017.

“Nairobi Kenya! Look out for ur date tomorrow!” he tweeted.

Asides his African concert tours coming up, the starboy also has lined up concerts such as a DC concert coming up July 2 and London Wireless festival on July 9.

Wizkid has been nominated alongside Mr Eazi, Tekno, Davido, Babes Wodumo, AKA and Nasty C in the BET Best International Act Africa category.
