The First Lady and Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Mrs. Janet Museveni has commended the concept of public-private partnerships in improving the delivery of social services among communities.
She was speaking at the commissioning of a well refurbished maternity ward at Kisoro Hospital which has been done by the sons and daughters of Kisoro District together with their friends. The function was on Monday 25/08/2014.
“It is encouraging and gratifying to note that the maternity ward has been rehabilitated through a public-private partnership spearheaded by men and women of goodwill”, she said, adding that “This noble act is a manifestation that our country has selfless people who really care for other people, and that it is possible to rally people for good causes in spite of their differences”.
She saluted the IGP, Kale Kayihura and the Uganda Police for leading this incredible drive, Kisoro FM radio and a host of other private companies and individuals for generating the resources to fully rehabilitate the maternity ward.
She observed that if the Kisoro approach could be replicated in other needy areas, much more would be achieved with the country’s current resource envelope.
Janet Museveni said that even though Uganda has made progress in ensuring maternal health, the maternal death rates are still too high. She emphasized that there is no reason whatsoever why any mother should die while giving birth, even here in Uganda, and more painfully when such a death is preventable, as is true in most cases.
Speaking on HIV/AIDS, she said that the success so far achieved in the battle against the scourge is being undermined by reckless and irresponsible behaviour. She appealed to married couples to be faithful to each other and to test for HIV/AIDS in order to establish their status, saying it is through this that we can prevent mother-to-child transmission of the disease and ensure an HIV-free generation of Ugandans.
She also launched the Kisoro Marathon 2014 to raise money for renovating and re-equipping of the Pediatric Ward at Kisoro hospital, promising to be a partner in this endeavour.
The Minister of Agriculture, Tress Buchanayandi, who is also MP for Bufumbira South recognized government’s efforts to improve the socio-economic well-being of the people of Kisoro and Uganda in general and thanked the people for their unwavering support of the NRM. He also said the people of Kisoro fully support President Museveni’s sole candidature for NRM in 2016.
Hon. Sarah Opendi, the State Minister for Health assured the people that government is continuing to improve infrastructure facilities at hospitals and health centres in the country so as to improve maternal and child health. She encouraged all expecting mothers to deliver from these health facilities and for men to always accompany and support their wives. She appreciated the selfless efforts of the medical staff at Kisoro Hospital.
The function was also attended by all Members of Parliament from Kisoro District, the Chairman LCV Bazanye Milton, RDC Pulkelia Muhindo, Senior Police Officers, elders and hundreds of people from the district.
